 RV Heraclitus
The
R/V Heraclitus (named after the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus) is an 84
ft, ferro-cement, Chinese junk designed and built by the Institute of
Ecotechnics (UK), and outfitted as an ocean-going research vessel.
In March 1975, the ship was launched in Oakland, California and set sail
under the Golden Gate Bridge on her maiden voyage.
Since that time, RV Heraclitus has traveled over 200,000 nautical
miles, undertaking a series of voyages and expeditions to some of the most
challenging, remote and exotic places on Earth - from the upper reaches of the
Amazon River to the frozen waters of the Antarctic to the coral reefs spanning
the tropical waters of the world’s oceans.
RV Heraclitus
was chartered
by the Planetary Coral Reef Foundation,
www.pcrf.org,
from 1991 to 2006 as its research vessel to study the world’s coral reefs. RV Heraclitus offers an
innovative seamanship, adventure, and coral reef field research educational program and to
date is the only ship continually out in the field studying and monitoring coral
reefs on a planetary basis.
