Save the Reefs Event supports

The “Save the Reefs” event began mid-day on February 20; ninety golf carts assembled at the Warren Golf and Country Club and lined up sharply at noon. Long-term sponsors of the Planetary Coral Reef Foundation (PCRF) and the host of the event, Maniam and his wife, Vasenta, (co-founders of Seagull Marine) greeted all the guests along with the other committee members, Dean Tan, Mr. Muru, Ms. Nina and Ms. Riza. Excitement was palpable as golfers, dressed in smart attire and cued in groups of four to depart on the stroke of twelve. A “Hole in One” prize of $10,000 was featured – young and old eagerly wished to stand the test in hopes of winning the pot of gold. Members of PCRF stood attentively by and waved to the carts as they rolled out, and into the sea of grass green.

Planetary Coral Reef Foundation (PCRF) members, Abigail Alling and Mark Van Thillo, joined the event from the US bringing with them auction items from Biosphere Foundation (the parent organization for PCRF). The items included a red Fender guitar signed by country bluegrass musicians, a painting of Marilyn Monroe by the former assistant to Andy Warhol and a book signed by the author/actor, Jeff Bridges.  Humbled by the generosity of our Singapore hosts and their guests, we watched winners receive their trophies and guests out-bid each other for the array of auction items. The entire evening was elegant and great fun – all were in good humor and the offerings were generously given to encourage our continued work with marine conservation.

The day had been long anticipated. The tournament was a kick-off event to feature the incorporation of Biosphere Society Singapore – the entity that would support PCRF’s program at sea community-based conservation programs. Yves de Leeneer, Founder and Chairman of the Biosphere Society Singapore, introduced this new society that would support the work of PCRF in years to come. Dirk Davidse, long-term PCRF sponsor, immediately offered to host a follow-up charity luncheon in support of Biosphere Society Singapore at Churascaria restaurant on April 5. We are on our way and wish to thank you all!
